Maternity is responsible for the birth and care of the cow/heifer and the new born calf.
Protocol is as follows:
- The three prefresh groups are checked every 20 minutes for any sign that the calving progress is beginning, once they calving process begins the cow is then moved to a sand pack to continue and finish the calving process
- Mucus, water bag, or feet and nose are visible
- Once the baby is born the cow and calf is brought in to be cared for
- Cow Care:
- Check tag numbers and registration
- Take temperature
- Check colostrum for abnormalities
- Body Score
- Record all calving information (sex of calf, problems, etc.)
- administer vaccines
- Milk out colostrum (check, record, and store according to percentage)
- Calf Care:
- Sex calf
- Dry Calf
- Dip Navel
- Administer vaccines
- Tag (Number and Registration)
- Put in Pen according to Sex
- Tube Pasteurized Colostrum
- Calves are moved from the maternity to the calf barn after they are dry from heat lamps
